Before you even think about boxing up your possessions and moving them to the removals truck, you need to think carefully about de cluttering your house, and how you are going to go about it. Moving home is an incredibly stressful time, but it can be made less painful, and more productive, if you de clutter your home prior to packing up your possessions. What’s important, is that you only transfer those possessions that you actually need. This is even more important when you are downsizing. Below we offer our helpful, quick guide to de cluttering your home, before the big move!

Do a little each day

The main focus should be on doing a little bit of de cluttering each day. If you break down this mammoth task into bite sized manageable chunks, then it won’t seem so daunting. It’s also a good idea to set an amount of time for de cluttering, as well as a preferred time of day that suits your schedule.

Focus upon one room at a time

Draw up a list of all the rooms in your home and systematically work your way through them, one room at a time. Only move on to the next room, once you have completely sorted through the previous room on the list. This will allow you to see the progress that is being made, as well as giving structure and purpose to the task of sorting out your belongings.

Donate to charity

It is important that as you de clutter, that you sort your items into those items that you need to chuck out, those that you can recycle, and those that can be donated to charity. We all have a stack of clothes, books and unused kitchen accessories that are shiver into cupboards. There is also a good chance that there will be bits and bobs of furniture that you no longer need, so donating to charity will instantly lessen the load, as well as being a great thing to do!

We now all know the importance of recycling. So when going through the de cluttering process, it is important that you sort out those items that are suitable for recycling. If you are unsure about what can be recycled, then your local recycling centre will be able to help you. Popular items that you will be able to recycle include plastics, glass and fabrics. So, while de cluttering your home, it’s a good idea to set up separate areas in which to store these items.

Hiring a skip

It is hugely advisable that you hire a skip for the duration of your de cluttering. This enables you to quickly dispose of those items that you no longer wish to keep, and which are not suitable for being recycled. If you are unsure as to what size of skip to hire, the skip hire company will be more than happy to recommend the relevant skip. You just need to be careful with what you place into the skip, as items such as microwaves, fridge freezers, monitors, paint and anything containing lead, cannot be placed into a skip. Once again, consult your skip hire company.

We hope that you have found this quick de cluttering guide useful. Just remember that de cluttering is incredibly cathartic and will save you money when it comes to hiring a removal company. Make the de cluttering process as fun and as productive as possible
